As experts in the field of digital forensics, Data Specialist Group has been increasingly called upon to investigate cases where cell phones were used to commit crimes. Currently, we are working on a case where a person was distracted while driving, and inadvertently crashed into an unsuspecting victim. The Florida Department of Safety and Motor Vehicles reported more than 45,000 distracted driving crashes in 2015. The three leading counties were Orange County (5506), Miami-Dade (4445), and Hillsborough (3896). As a reult of these distracted driving crashes, there were more than 39,000 injuries and 214 deaths in Florida alone. These statistics become much more staggering if we consider the whole of the United States, where 9 Americans are killed every day from distracted driving accidents. These were injuries and deaths that could have been prevented by simply focusing on the road.

To avoid distracted driving, It is important to understand the different ways a driver could become distracted:

Visual: Taking your eyes off the road.

Manual: Taking your hands off the steering wheel.

Cognitive: Thinking about anything other than driving.

Interestingly enough, texting requires all three types of distraction. This means that texting and driving could not possibly be more dangerous! However, texting and driving is not the only way phones could be used to become distracted while driving. Answering phone calls, talking on the phone, and even glancing at notifications on our phones are causes for distracted driving.

One study revealed that on average, a driver takes their eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds to text. If we consider the speed of the vehicle they are driving, let’s say, 55mph, they have driven the length of a football field before they look up at the road!
